Full Moons and the Power of Release & Intention Setting

There’s something about a Full Moon that heightens your awareness, whether you’re attuned to it or not.

Even if you don’t track moon cycles or think of yourself as “into” that kind of thing, you’ve probably felt it before, whether you’re feeling more emotional, unable to sleep or you’re just feeling restless and can’t quite explain why.

The Full Moon has a way of bringing things into the light. In Yoga and Wellbeing spaces, the Full Moon is often linked to reflection and release. Not pushing forward or fixing yourself, but pausing. Softening. Letting go of what you no longer need.

The Energy of a Full Moon

If the New Moon is about starting fresh, the Full Moon is about seeing what’s actually here.

It’s the perfect time to look inward and see / feel what’s going on, it highlights patterns, habits, emotions, stories, the things that are just below the surface. This isn’t about judging yourself or picking things apart. It’s just awareness. And sometimes awareness is enough to change everything.

Release and Let go

Taking the time to reflect under a full moon will often illuminate the parts of ourselves that no longer serve us and gives us the opportunity to release and let go of these things:

  • beliefs that don’t really fit anymore

  • habits that leave you feeling drained

  • expectations you picked up from somewhere else

  • emotional patterns that keep looping

You don’t have to fix any of it. Just noticing is enough. From there, you can gently ask:

  • What am I tired of carrying?

  • What feels heavy or forced right now?

  • Where am I holding on out of fear instead of care?

There’s something powerful about simply naming what you’re ready to let go of.

Moving and Releasing

Letting go doesn’t just happen in your head.

Our bodies hold onto stress and emotion long after the moment has passed, which is why Full Moon practices often involve movement, breath, or rest. Yoga, stretching, deep breathing, or even doing nothing at all can help the nervous system settle.

When the body feels safe, release doesn’t need to be forced, it just happens.

You might feel emotions come up unexpectedly. That’s okay. You don’t need to analyse them or push them away. Just notice. Your body knows how to unwind when you let it.

Setting your Intentions

The Full Moon is mostly about release, but it also creates space to welcome in the new.

After letting go, we can then set our intentions for the following month by asking questions like:

  • How do I actually want to feel?

  • What do I want more of?

  • What does alignment look like for me right now?

Intentions don’t need to be huge goals as such. They can be quiet and simple, like:

  • I choose ease where I can.

  • I trust my timing.

  • I let myself rest without guilt.

This isn’t about controlling what happens next. It’s more like setting a tone and seeing what meets you there.

A Simple Full Moon Ritual

If ritual feels supportive, you could try something like this:

  • Create a calm space: low lights, a candle, or sitting by a window.

  • Take a few slow breaths and let your body settle.

  • Write down what you’re ready to release. Be honest.

  • Acknowledge it for what it taught you.

  • Tear up or safely burn the paper if that feels right.

  • Write one or two intentions that feel kind, not demanding.

  • Finish by placing a hand on your heart or belly, reminding yourself you’re supported.

There’s no right way to do this. Showing up is enough.

A Final Reminder

The Full Moon doesn’t give you anything you don’t already have. It just reflects what’s already there.

Your ability to reflect, let go, and listen to what’s happening on the inside - that’s your magic. The Moon just helps you notice.

You don’t need to become someone new under a Full Moon. Sometimes the invitation is simply to come back to yourself.

And that's powerful enough.
